Ryan Cronin: Artist in Residency
Growing up in New York in the 1980s, artist Ryan Cronin was surrounded by and embraced pop culture. The bright colors and sounds of punk rock, skateboarding, MTV, graffiti and the youthful, push-it-to-the-limit attitude of the time became an integral part of who Cronin is today. This influence is apparent in his playful yet intelligent approach to painting. As a painter, sculptor, and muralist, he appropriates text and figures from his surroundings to reconfigure the world through art.
Since the early 90s, Cronin’s work has been provoking discussion and tackling social issues while bringing a sense of play into the viewer's day. You can find Cronin’s work hanging with Basquiat, Haring, Hirst and Warhol in Mallorca, Spain. In 2022 his painting, Obama, Big Left, was selected to be included in the permanent collection of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. He has over 100 pieces of available art including a body of work created at Thread Artist Residency in Senegal, through the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
