Long before it became a luxury dude ranch, the land on which Paws Up Montana resides was part of Captain Meriwether Lewis’ journey home. In 1806, Lewis climbed Lookout Rock, searching for the best route back from the Pacific Ocean. Decades later, in 1882, homesteader Henry Martin staked a gold mining claim on Martin Pasture, setting the stage for the ranching legacy that would follow.
Benjamin and Ollie Morris built the Morris Ranch House at the turn of the century, solidifying the land’s future in cattle ranching. By 1915, Paul Greenough expanded the property into Sunset Valley Ranch, where he raised sheep branded with a distinctive green “O.” Over the decades, the ranch changed hands several times. Beginning in 1965, Land and Jon Lindbergh, sons of aviator Charles Lindbergh, operated the Lindbergh Cattle Company for over two decades.
In 1997, Dave and Nadine Lipson purchased the ranch, renaming it Paws Up after the enthusiastic greeting of their dogs. They transformed private ranching into luxury hospitality, opening Paws Up Montana (originally called The Resort at Paws Up) in 2005. Today, guests experience a perfect blend of authentic ranch life, wilderness adventure, culinary excellence, and wellness offerings—set against the breathtaking backdrop of Montana’s legendary landscape.
