Considered one of the true superstars in Oregon’s renowned viticulture scene, Lynn Penner-Ash studied viticulture and enology at the University of California, Davis, the birthplace of the American wine industry.
Following her education, Penner-Ash’s resume reads like a who’s who of California wines, taking her from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars to Domaine Chandon and Chateau St. Jean. Intrigued by Oregon’s blossoming wine scene, she moved to Oregon with husband Ron in 1988, becoming winemaker at Rex Hill vineyards and the first female winemaker to be hired in Oregon.
Eventually becoming Rex Hill’s president, she continued her illustrious career there until co-founding Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in 2001 with her husband. Designing and building a sustainable, gravity-flow estate winery came next amid the coveted vineyards. Growing from 125 cases of Pinot Noir early on to 15,000 cases of Pinot Noir, Riesling, Syrah and Viognier in 2015, Penner-Ash continues to be a favorite with thousands of oenophiles that come through Oregon’s renowned Yamhill-Carlton AVA.
Lynn Penner-Ash will bring her talents and select wines to The Resort at Paws Up, happy to answer questions about what it’s been like to be one of Oregon’s most revered winemakers.
