Louie Mueller Barbecue has been proclaimed the Cathedral and the Mecca of Texas barbecue. What began in an alley in 1949 in Taylor, Texas, is today recognized as one of the Top 50 Barbecue Joints in the World by Texas Monthly. In fact, the restaurant was named as the top BBQ joint in Texas in the inaugural issue of Texas Monthly’s best list in 1973. Louie Mueller is the only restaurant to have been named either #1 or #2 every year since. The restaurant was honored with a best barbecue award by the CBS Early Show and received an America’s Classics Award from the James Beard Foundation. Louie Mueller was the first barbecue restaurant in the country to receive this honor. At the helm of the success is Louie Mueller’s grandson, Chef Wayne Mueller, a modern-day culinary alchemist who, like his father and grandfather before him, takes base cuts of meat and turns them into black gold.
